Online Signups For Storm Shelter Rebate Wait List Continue

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After deadly tornadoes that tore through North Texas and Oklahoma, more people started inquiring about installing storm shelters or safe rooms. Now, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is in its first full week of online signups for the storm shelter/safe room rebate program wait list.

During the first week of June the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) launched to Metro Safe Room Rebate Program to help North Texans cover some of the costs with storm shelters/safe rooms. It took less than four hours and all the money designated for the program was gone. The online rebate application process opened at 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5 and was shut down at 5:30 a.m. In the end the NCTCOG only accepted the applications of 400 families.

Now the NCTCOG has opened an online wait list for Texans who'd like to register for the rebate when more funds become available. Registration for the wait list program is happening by county alphabetical order.

Anyone wanting to be placed on the wait list will need to log on to the NCTCOG website on or after 7 p.m., on their designated day. No documentation will be required to be placed on the wait list. Anyone wanting to be on the list, who doesn't have internet access, can call the NCTCOG Emergency Preparedness department at 817-695-9235.

The weekday schedule for the Safe Room County Wait List is as follows -

  • Johnson and Kaufman County on Wednesday, June 26, 2013
  • Navarro and Palo Pinto County on Thursday, June 27, 2013
  • Parker and Rockwall County on Friday, June 28, 2013

It could take anywhere from three to 18 months to find out if you qualify for the rebate. Even if you qualify, applicants should not start building until they have received notification that they have been selected for an award, and even then there are stipulations on who can build the safe room. To receive reimbursement applicants must contract with National Storm Shelter Association or American Tornado Shelter Association certified suppliers.
