On-Leave Rangers Announcer Barnett To Call UNT Games

DENTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - A Texas Rangers TV announcer off the air since his rambling comments during a June game will broadcast two college football matchups.

The University of North Texas said Wednesday that Dave Barnett will do play-by-play television coverage Saturday against Texas Southern and Nov. 10 vs. South Alabama.

Barnett is a 1979 graduate of North Texas, known then as North Texas State.

During the broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest Barnett said, Go ahead run… is at 5th on what Adams is insisting on calling a botched robbery. What actually happened was his henchmen took piece literally out of…"

Barnett's role as the Rangers play-by-play announcer is being filled by Steve Busby for the remainder of the season. Barnett previously announced he was taking an indefinite leave of absence due to medical reasons.

Rangers spokesman John Blake says Barnett informed the club about the UNT commitment and the baseball team has no issues with it.

Barnett did not immediately respond to a message Wednesday.
