Obama In Dallas To Thank ACA Volunteers
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The rollout of the Affordable Care Act did not go as planned. But on Wednesday, President Barack Obama will be in Dallas to thank the volunteers who have been educating the uninsured. Members of Dallas Area Interfaith will be at Temple Emanu-El to greet President Obama.
Dallas Area Interfaith is an organization which helped put together a booklet -- in both English and Spanish -- which explains the embattled Affordable Care Act. The group is made up of diverse institutions of all religions and races. Members explained that they are honored to be recognized by the President. "To be recognized by the federal government and the President is really overwhelming to us," said Dallas Area Interfaith member Harry Davis.
It is estimated that around 25 percent of Texans have no healthcare insurance. Educating the public has taken on greater significance since so many people have been unable to get past technical problems with the new healthcare website.
While the Obama administration continues trying to repair those website glitches, the President will be in Dallas to meet the volunteers and thank them for getting the word out about the new healthcare reform law. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins helped organize the President's meeting on Wednesday.
The President will meet with around 75 volunteers. Although the volunteers have not been able to get people past the website issues, they have helped about 2,000 people better understand their options under the new healthcare law.
Senior Rabbi David Stern said that he does not know what to expect during President Obama's visit at Temple Emanu-El. "I don't know a lot about what's going to happen," he said. "There are a gathering of volunteers on this coalition, again, from every background, every religious background, every ethnic background, in the city who will be here to hear from him. And I hope what he'll do is inspire folks to keep doing the work to make this legislation work for as many people as possible."
Conservatives in Texas have sharply criticized the President's healthcare reform law, with Gov. Rick Perry being among the strongest voices of opposition.
