New DISD Calendar Offers Incentive For Some Students

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The school year isn't over, but the Dallas Independent School District is already looking towards the next school year.

After reviewing several options, including a proposal for a year-round calendar, the district decided on a 182 school day year. It's in effect for the 2012-13 school year.

School in the Dallas ISD is set to begin on August 27, but there are two different end dates. For grades Pre-K through 8th grade, the last day of school will be June 11. For grades 9-12, the final day of school will be June 12.

The Dallas ISD is also offering a new incentive for students in grades 9-12. High school students can reduce the length of their school year by eight days if they meet certain requirements.

The Texas Education Agency's new Optional Flexible Year Plan would in essence reward students that meet and exceed expectations.

The requirements include: passing all courses, TAKS and the end of course/STARR exam. Also, students can't miss more than seven days of school and have no Level 4 or 5 discipline offenses.

Dallas ISD officials say elementary and middle school students are not eligible for the incentive.

Other highlights of the new DISD schedule include Thanksgiving break from November 21 to the 23, Winter Break from December 24 until January 4 and Spring Break from March 11 through the 15.
