Motorcyclist Dies During Garland Police Chase
GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - A motorcycle driver died Tuesday night while trying to flee from police. The incident happened at about 8:40 p.m. as a Garland Police Department officer attempted to stop a 2002 Honda motorcycle that was traveling over 100 mph northbound on Interstate-635, according to department spokesman Joe Harn. The driver exited onto Northwest Highway, and the officer then tried to make the traffic stop.
But the motorcycle driver took off at a high rate of speed, eastbound along Northwest Highway. The driver lost control of his bike at the intersection of Northwest Highway and Centerville Road, explained Harn. The motorcycle struck a white Cadillac and the driver -- later identified as 22-year-old Edgar Esparza of Dallas -- was ejected.
Esparza was transported by air ambulance to Parkland Hospital, but ultimately pronounced dead. Police are not sure why he fled from the officer.
The crashed motorcycle also struck a 20-year-old female who was waiting at a nearby DART bus stop. She suffered minor injuries, but refused to be transported to the hospital.
