ME: Heat Caused Death Of Child Left In Daycare Van
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - There is new information surrounding the death of a three-year-old Dallas boy left in a daycare van.
Monday afternoon the Dallas County Medical Examiner officially ruled that the death of little Benjamin Price was an accident due to extreme heat.
Little T's Tiny Tots Daycare, in the 2200 block of S. Buckner in Dallas, was open for business Monday, but with restrictions. The state has ordered that the daycare stop all transportation services until further notice.
The death of Benjamin Price has touched the hearts of many people – even strangers.
Mario Guajardo and his family went to the daycare center to pay tribute to the little boy they never met.
"I have a four year old and I don't know what I'd do if something happened to my baby," Mr. Guajardo said emotionally.
The Guajardo family left a stuffed animal at a makeshift memorial that has been set up outside the daycare.
"We just wanted to pay our respects to the baby and his grandparents. It's a very sad situation," the Dallas father said. "When I saw the news it hurt me pretty bad."
Dallas police confirm that the children at the daycare were taken out on a field trip. When they returned to the daycare the driver left Benjamin inside the van. It was more than two hours before anyone noticed the child wasn't inside.
The official cause of Benjamin's death is hypothermia.
The owner of the daycare is listed as a Tina Nichols of DeSoto. CBS 11 News tried to make contact with her but have not had requests answered.
Dallas police say they are still investigating the incident and talking with the driver who left Benjamin inside the van.
So far no charges have been filed.
