Man With Long History Of Sex Crimes Sentenced To 70 Years
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A convicted pedophile whose sex crimes date back at least 30 years has been sentenced to prison for failing to register as a sex offender.
The 70-year sentence imposed by a Tarrant County judge Tuesday effectively amounts to a life sentence for 69-year-old Lloyd Gibson.
Prosecutors say Gibson's latest offense was for removing his ankle monitor and relocating from Fort Worth to Austin without notifying authorities. He was added to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Sex Offender list before he was arrested in December 2012. Last year a jury deliberated for less than 30 minutes before convicting Gibson of failure to register as a sex offender.
Prosecutors say during his sentencing hearing Tuesday, Gibson disclosed he was the man wanted for breaking into dozens of Houston homes at night in the late 1970s and exposing himself to children. The suspect came to be known as the "baseball cap bandit."
During that same hearing, Gibson also admitted that he had regularly exposed himself to elementary school children on a playground by pressing his genitals through a chain-link fence. Continuing his confessions, he further acknowledged having driven around Texas while naked from the waist down, carrying cookies, gloves and a wig in his car, while looking for kids.
In the past four decades, Gibson was convicted of eight times sex crimes. His sentences totaled 103 years in prison, but until now he has only served 29.
Tarrant County prosecutor Kim D'Avignon said, "Lloyd Gibson has spent his whole life victimizing others. That is his life's work. The criminal justice system has tried again and again to get him off the streets. Hopefully, we did it today."
