Faced with the hardship of aging parents, and adverse to nursing homes, many adults are inviting their parents to move in. It can be a great experience to have a loved one close, and an easy way to keep an extra eye on them, but will also take some preparation to make sure everyone feels at home. Here are some businesses in Dallas that can help get a home and a family ready for this change.
Hours: Mon to Fri – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but will take calls during off hours
Bathtubs can be difficult and dangerous to maneuver for people as they get older, so many companies offer ways to modify them for easier access. One such company is Access Conversions, which cuts a small area out of the side of a bathtub, creating easy access for anyone not otherwise able to safely step over the side. The procedure is reversible if this access is no longer needed.

New bedroom furniture is often on the list of things to buy for a new house guest. Weir's Furniture is a good place to start with four locations in the Metroplex. Each is a furniture store and an outlet, so they offer a nice selection of pieces and prices. The most unique part though is the country store and post office inside. When a parent is not able to drive themselves, this becomes an additional burden, but there are options out there. Just one of the companies with free or low cost rides is the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). DART offers door-to-door service for those unable to ride traditional public transit and offers two types of services. Demand service can be utilized when calling ahead for reservations while subscription service is great for reoccurring weekly trips to the doctor or grocery store.

The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) is a great resources for advice or a little help for the overwhelmed. The website is the best place to start, but it also contains phone numbers for a variety of helplines and links to many different services for aging Texans including adult daycare, home healthcare, and community programs.
