Lubbock Police Investigating Officer For Negligently Discharging Gun In Pursuit

LUBBOCK (AP) - Lubbock police say they're investigating after an officer negligently discharged his weapon while pursuing a suspect, about a week after the police chief said he closed the department's firing range following two negligent discharges.
Police spokesman Lt. Ray Mendoza says that as officers Sunday located a domestic disturbance suspect in a backyard, the officer's gun discharged. The bullet went through a wooden gate and into the ground. No one was injured.
Mendoza says, "We take every one of these situations very seriously. This one was out in the public, which concerns us."
On Oct. 10, Chief Greg Stevens said he closed the firing range while investigating incidents on Sept. 28 and Oct. 9. In both, officers' weapons discharged during the break-down and cleaning process following training. No one was injured.
