Jury Sentences Mesquite Man To 6-Years For Killing Dog

MESQUITE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - Earlier this week, a Mesquite man was convicted on a felony charge for beating his dog, Candy, with a shovel and then drowning her - today he learned his sentence.

60-year old Robert Prichard claimed his Pitbull turned on him in 2013 when he beat her. He also contended he tossed the pit bull in the pool to cool it off, but the jury didn't buy it.

On Friday morning the jury gave Prichard 6 1/2 years in jail.

During the punishment phase, Prichard asked for mercy and was hoping for probation.

Prosecutors wanted the max 10-year prison term.
