Judge Orders Meeting To Discuss DISD Superintendent's Job

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It took several months and a court order, but it looks like a few Dallas Independent School board members will get their wish -- a public meeting to discuss the job of the district's superintendent, Mike Miles.

Three elected school board members spent two and half hours with lawyers in state district court Tuesday morning, pleading their case for the meeting.

Trustees Joyce Foreman, Elizabeth Jones and Bernadette Nutall argued for their desire to discuss Miles' performance.  They say DISD School Board President Miguel Solis failed to grant their request.

"If three members of the board request a meeting on a certain topic, it must be set for meeting within 60 days. The board president did not do that, and my clients see that as a violation of the policies," said attorney Jack Ternan, who is representing the women.

For months now, the trio of school board trustees have tusseled with Miles over his leadership and his direction.

Last October, Miles ordered DISD police to remove trustee nutall from a south dallas middle school, after an argument.

In February, the three trustees called for a board meeting that included public discussion regarding the Miles, but it has not yet happened.

"The policy is mandatory.  Policy says the board president shall call a meeting at the written request of three board members. There's no discretion in the policy with respect to that," said Ternan.

After today's hearing, the court ordered meeting has been set for Friday, May 1, at 4 pm.
