Irving Police Shoot & Kill Wanted Man
IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Irving shot and killed a suspect who was wanted on felony warrants Sunday evening, hours after a SWAT team was deployed to a hotel in search of the man.
The incident started at about 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, when an officer on patrol spotted the suspect's car outside of the Crossroads Hotel, located on Airport Freeway near the old Texas Stadium site, said Irving police spokesman James McLellan.
Officers worked to determine if the man was at the motel and, "given his propensity for violence," called in a SWAT team to help, McLellan said.
More than five hours later, the suspect got into his car and tried to flee from the scene, ramming into a tactical van that was blocking the entrance to the hotel. Two officers, fearing for their lives, opened fire on the suspect. That man was struck, and he died at the scene.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, had four separate felony warrants, McLellan said. They included warrants for possession of narcotics, possession of a firearm, identity theft and evading arrest.
Police said that the two officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave pending an internal review and a referral to the Dallas County District Attorney's office.
