Hundreds Of North Texans Plan To Attend Inauguration
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - For only the second time in history, the presidential inauguration and the observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will fall on the same day.
Hundreds of North Texans plan to be there to witness the historic moment.
"I'm not going to miss the trip this go round," said Patty Lynn, who had planned to attend President Barack Obama's first inauguration ceremony in 2009, but had to cancel because she got brain surgery. "I'm going to be there because this is history."
She was among more than 300 people who loaded buses early Saturday morning for the roadtrip of a lifetime.
The ceremony will be the convergence of the civil rights movement and the swearing in of the nation's first black president.
President Obama will be sworn in with one of Dr. King's Bibles.
"It means everything to me. My mom wanted to see the first black president elected and she passed right after she made sure that the family voted for him," Lynn said.
Members of the Dallas County East Democrats boarded the buses.
"It's the second inaguration for the Barack Obama. I couldn't be happier going on this trip,"said Susie Hess.
Dozens of SMU journalism students left for Washington early Saturday.
Like good journalists, they are documenting their historic experience.
"We are all journalism majors so we are blogging, we are videoing, tweeting. We are writing. We are doing everything so we are getting real life practice," Summer Dashe, a senior majoring in broadcast journalism.
The students attended the Black Tie and Boots Ball as part of their journey.
"It's history in the making so it's an incredible experience," said Kelsey Charles.
Some 800,000 people are expected to gather on the National Mall for the public ceremony.
