HALTOM CITY (CBSDFW.COM) – A truck driver is facing charges after hitting an 9-year-old boy named John Rendon last night in Haltom City.

Police say they have charged 78-year-old Vernon McFatridge with intoxication assault after he hit the child who was riding his bike at the time.

Rendon was riding around in a mobile home park on Bonanza Drive near Highway 377 Monday night.

"I know the boy was not in the middle of the street," said Anthony Cruz who lives near where Rendon was hit. "He was on the side. And before we know, Pow!...I came out and he was laying down right there."

McFatridge was taken into custody immediately, and toxicology reports revealed he was driving under the influence.

"The police got here and the guy was all lost, you know?" Cruz said. "The old man, the police got here and the police said they could smell the alcohol coming out of his mouth."

The child was airlifted to Cook Children's Hospital in critical condition, however, the boy has since been moved out of ICU and is in stable condition. Family members say he's suffering from head trauma, a broken hand an injured knee.
