Grand Prairie Homeowner Shoots Home Invader

GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - A 21 year old man is in the hospital, and a homeowner's bullet put him there.

Grand Prairie police say the homeowner called 9-1-1 around 2:30 on November 27, to report someone breaking into a window of his home, located in the 2000 block of Clark Trail.

The homeowner continued to talk to the 9-1-1 dispatcher, as he grabbed his handgun and argued with the suspect as he entered the home.

Police say the homeowner mentioned the suspect, identified as Gilberto Balderas, was carrying a knife, right before he fired his gun.

The suspect was transported to JPS hospital, with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Neighbors say the area is pretty quiet and the homeowners keep to themselves.

"They are good people. Don't bother nobody. They don't come outside," said Eric Mappis, who described the homeowner who fired the gun as middle aged.

"Why the suspect picked this specific house I have no idea," said Grand Prairie Police Detective Lyle Genslar. "But he picked the wrong house."

Police say the shooting will be investigated, but the preliminary investigation shows the homeowner owned and used his gun lawfully.

The suspect will be charged with burglary.
