Funeral Services Set For Dallas Fire Captain Killed In West
WEST (CBSDFW.COM) -- Kenneth "Luckey" Harris, a captain with the Dallas Fire Department who died in Wednesday's fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, will be remembered by friends and family at a funeral service this week.
Harris, 52, was off duty at the time but responded to the initial fire at the plant that resulted in the devastating explosion.
"Captain Harris rushed to the scene compelled to provide assistance to his community during this crisis," said Mayor Mike Rawlings in a statement. "I want to express my deepest condolences to his family, friends and co-workers."
After graduating from the Dallas Fire Academy in 1982, "Luckey" (as friends called him) served as a firefighter with the Dallas Fire Department for over 31 years.
"Our hearts are heavy and hurting with the loss of such a great firefighter, great husband and great family man," said Dallas Fire Chief Louie Bright III. "Dallas Fire-Rescue is wrapping its arms around the Harris family to provide comfort and support."
According to his obituary, he "loved offshore fishing with his sons and spending time on his boat the "Boots Up." He also enjoyed hunting, traveling and spending time with friends. He was a member of High Point Church in Waco and the Dallas Firefighters Association-Local 58."
He and his family also owned Harris Home Inspections and Construction, located in West.
Harris is survived by his wife of 28 years, Holly Harris of West, two sisters, his parents and three sons.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. The burial will follow at Bold Springs Cemetery near West. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at St. Mary's Church in West.
