Fire Destroys Dozens Of Cars At Arlington Salvage Yard
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A raging fire at a salvage yard, not even whimper anymore.
Arlington firefighters put out the blaze that created a tower of smoke over Arlington Thursday evening.
Fire crews strung 900 feet of hose in one area just to reach the flames.
"Access was the biggest issue," said Arlington Battalion Chief Jim Silveus. "The fire itself was hard to get to – maneuvering our equipment into the salvage yard was difficult."
The owner of All Star Import & American Auto Parts, Babak Zirakchi, said he was on the property with his son and several employees when the fire started. He tried to tame it with a fire extinguisher
"But, it was no match for that," he said. "I went and looked at it and said, there is no way we could battle this fire."
Zirakchi said he lost about a third of his inventory. Firefighters estimate a hundred cars burned. The plastic inside them helped turn the smoke pitch black.
"When I was driving home, I could see the smoke from 15 miles away," said Ryan Zaumfeil.
He was surprised to find the fire just across the street from home.
He's happy no one was hurt, no homes damaged.
"The only problem is we're out of power," he said. "It's hot. It's really hot."
Utility crews worked overnight and were able to restore power. Investigators were not able to determine the cause of the fire Thursday night.
Crews from the Arlington and Kennedale Fire Departments helped battle the blaze.
