Ex-Jailer Gets Probation For Striking, Killing Woman With His Jeep
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A former employee of the Tarrant County Jail was sentenced to 10 years' probation Friday night for the 2012 death of a woman. Prosecutors say the woman died after the ex-jailer struck her with his Jeep, then fled the scene.
The accident happened on in the early morning hours of October 14, 2012 on Interstate 30 in Fort Worth.
Police say Jeffrey Holland and a friend left a bar and were driving on westbound I-30 near the Beach Street exit, headed to a strip club.
When Holland neared the exit, his Jeep hit 28-year-old Ladrieka Waggoner, who was walking on the shoulder of the road.
The crash sent Waggoner flying into a guardrail, severing her body. Officials described Waggoner as a recently-married college student at the time of the accident.
According to investigators, the airbags in Holland's black 2008 model Jeep went off, but he continued on. The crash also caused the Jeep's T-top to blow off.
After the sun came out, someone saw Waggoner's body, which was surrounded by her personal belongings. The person also noticed a T-top nearby.
An officer said he saw the T-top blow off a Jeep earlier that day and took down the vehicle's license plate number.
Police traced Holland to his Arlington home, where they found visible damage and body fluids on the front areas of the vehicle.
A spokeswoman for the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office said that when Holland answered the door, they smelled alcohol on his breath, and reportedly said he was hiding something but didn't know what it was.
Holland claimed that he returned to the scene, but didn't see anything and went home.
Holland was a jailer for three years with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department in the early 2000s.
"As a condition of his probation, state district Judge Ruben Gonzalez ordered Holland to spend 120 days in a lock-down facility and put up a memorial at the crash site where the victim was killed," spokeswoman Melody McDonald said.
Holland was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.
