Eight Horses Die In Stable Fire

ROWLETT (CBSDFW.COM) -   A fire in Rowlett destroyed a long-standing stable and killed eight horses late Saturday.

Firefighters rescued ten horses from the Rowlett Stables, located at the corner of Rowlett and Miller roads, but firefighters were forced into a defensive operation before they were able to get all the horses to safety.

Despite the fire station being right around the corner from the stables, lead fire investigator Eric Zimmerman said a muddy road and a creek-crossing made it difficult to access the property – costing firefighters valuable minutes.

One of the eight horses that didn't make it out belonged to 13-year-old Sindy Martinez.

"It's just heartbreaking," she said at the scene on Sunday. "I just can't take it. I will have him (Ace) in my heart forever."

Tommy Cleere of Garland said he has been coming to the Rowlett Stables for more than 40 years. He said the stables mean too much to too many people not to find a way to rebuild.

"I'm not a rich man," he said. "But darn sure I'll be trying to find others that are willing to help me."
