DPS Seeing Resurgance In Fake Telemarketing Calls

AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) - If you get a call from someone trying to raise money for the Texas Department of Public Safety, tell them no and hang up.

The DPS has been getting complaints again from people getting phone calls from telemarketers claiming they're from the state agency, trying to raise money to benefit the agency or troopers.

DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange says there's one problem with that. "We do not get funded through charitable campaigns or any telemarketing campaigns, we are funded through you tax dollars."

Mange says this isn't new, it's been going on for well over a decade, but she says every now and then there's a resurgence of these calls and that's happening now.
