Dewhurst Campaign Raised $3.3M In Late '12

AUSTIN (AP) — Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst raised $3.33 million in late 2012, but his campaign only reports having $1.97 million cash-on-hand.

Dewhurst ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate last year, defeated by Ted Cruz in the Republican primary to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Since then, he has said repeatedly he'll run for re-election as lieutenant governor next year.

His campaign said late Tuesday it took in $3.33 from around July 1 through Dec. 8.

It didn't say why he has less cash-on-hand, but Dewhurst may have spent it ahead of the July 31 runoff against Cruz, or serving debt.

Dewhurst said last month that over $760,000 was stolen by his campaign manager, Kenneth Barfield.

The meant his reported campaign funds fell from about $770,000 cash-on-hand in July to less than $7,300.
