Denton County Sheriff Deputy Charged With Official Oppression, Theft

DENTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - A Denton County Sheriff's deputy has been released from employment and charged with official oppression and theft.

28-year old Joshua Laningham, a seven year veteran with the department, was arrested Friday after being accused of stealing from two men during a recent traffic stop.

One an official complaint was filed with the department and Laningham was interviewed by investigators, he confessed to the allegations.

"Today, we have one less employed because the public's trust and confidence has been violated," said Denton County Sheriff William Travis. "I will not tolerate individuals that engage in activities that break the law."

Laningham is facing two charges of official oppression and one charge of theft over $1,500 and under $20,000 by a public servant.

His bond was set at $15,000.

The Sheriff's office is asking that anyone who had an encounter with the former deputy please contact them.
