Dallas Private School Evacuated, Hazmat Crews Called To Campus
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Firefighters evacuated part of the Hockaday School in Dallas, when a potentially explosive chemical was discovered on campus.
A Hockaday School spokeswoman says the head of the science department was conducting what he thought would be a routine cleaning, when he found a small amount of acetone peroxide in one of the classrooms in a portable building. The school used it for science class, and it was not properly disposed of, according to a fire department spokesman.
The school relocated some youngsters who were attending summer camp, as hazmat crews and the bomb squad responded to the scene. Crews took the small amount of chemical and blew it up.
"Because it was here, because we were at a school, we had a field across the street, we had a good place to blow it up or to dispose of it properly so that's what we used," said Lt. Joel Lavender with Dallas Fire Rescue.
No one was hurt.
