Dallas Man Among 'Faces Of Drunk Driving'
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Sean Carter is in a wheelchair, without the ability to walk or talk. But he is able to think, smile and share his sense of humor. He communicates with the help of a computer. And now, he is now the face of a very important Texas campaign.
Sean looks back on his college days fondly, as a model pursuing a business degree at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. "I was trying to find one girl I could give all my attention to, but I wasn't having any luck," he said. "So, at the time, I was dating three." But everything changed for Sean on March 27, 2005.
"I can't think about how he was before," said mother Jenny Carter. "I have to think about how he is today, and I have to be so thankful for how he is today."
While out drinking with friends, Sean got into a pickup truck. The truck driver lost control and slammed the vehicle into a tree, leaving Sean with a traumatic brain injury. The truck driver was sentenced to 10 years probation in the case. He finished college, but was later picked up twice more for driving while intoxicated.
But Sean Carter is now part of the Texas Department of Transportation's 'Faces of Drunk Driving' campaign. "I dream of having a good job. I dream of falling in love, getting married and having children of my own," Sean said. Another one of his dreams is slowly starting to come true now. With a little help from his mother, Sean is learning how to walk again.
"Drinking may be worth it for that one night of fun, but that's all it is," Sean said, "one night."
