Dallas County Reports 1st West Nile Virus Death Of 2015 Season

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Health officials have confirmed the first West Nile Virus death in Dallas County for the 2015 season.
According to Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) the resident was in their 80s and lived in the 75214 zip code. The person had underlying medical conditions and had been diagnosed with West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease.
The victim, and city of Dallas resident, is the third human care of West Nile Virus reported in Dallas County.
Late Tuesday afternoon DCHHS reported the county's 8th human case of WNV. The patient lives in the 75248 zip code.
Just one day ago, mosquito pools in several North Texas counties tested positive for West Nile virus. That same day, a resident in Irving was diagnosed with West Nile Fever and a resident in Grand Prairie was diagnosed with West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease.
As always, Texans are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites by practicing the five D's.
- DRAIN—all areas of standing water including changing water in wading pools, birdbaths, and cleaning out gutters;
- DEET—Use bug spray and protect clothing with repellents containing permethrin or DEET;
- DRESS—Dress in light- colored clothing with long sleeves and wear long pants;
- DUSK/DAWN—Limit outdoor exposure at dusk and dawn;
- DOORS—Keep door and window screens in good repair
