Conjoined Boys Separated At Dallas Hospital
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Surgeons at Medical City Children's Hospital in Dallas say they have successfully separated conjoined twin boys born last month.
The hospital says the babies, Emmet and Owen, are in stable condition and doing well.
The boys were born on July 15, joined from the breast bone to the belly button, sharing a liver and bowels.
They also suffered from a birth defect called an omphalocele, which left their intestines outside of their bodies and covered by only a thin layer of tissue.
They have been in the hospital's level 4 NICU for the past six weeks.
At birth, they weighed a combined 11 pounds, 15 ounces. Just prior to surgery on Saturday, their weight had reached more than 16 pounds.
"I can put the dreaming on hold and start initiating the next steps for my babies!" said the boys' mother on her blog.
