Condom Store Bringing New Life To Plano Strip Center

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - A new condom store is rolling out inside a Plano strip mall this week.  Nearby homeowners and Plano religious leaders aren't exactly ribbed with pleasure at the opening.

The store, called Condom Sense, opens Tuesday at Lancer's Square Shopping Center at Parker Road and Independence Parkway.

Store owner Mike Edwards says he plans a less risque store than other condom stores, offering more clothing and massage oils than sex toys, which will also be sold.

Edwards says it will bring new life and tax revenue to an old deteriorating strip mall full of vacant spaces. "We probably on the remodeling alone spent $60-70,000 and we are trying to improve the economy of the area."

Edwards has a certificate of occupancy, but it doesn't allow a sexually oriented business, which residents claim he's operating.  But the city says most adult novelty stores don't need an SOB permit, and unless police find violations the store will be allowed to open. "If its determined they are in violation then appropriate action will be taken," says Plano City Manager Bruce Glasscock.

Residents complained that X Rated videos will also be sold at the store, but Edwards says that's not true.
