Colleyville Expansion Project Too Close To Home For Some
COLLEYVILLE (CBS 11 NEWS) - Engineers presented final plans Tuesday that would expand a two-lane road some residents are trying to keep small and rural.
The expansion project, on Glade Road through Colleyville, would add turn lanes, sidewalks and larger concrete trails, and could take up to 10 years to complete.
The recommendations called for new lanes in some places, but also included options that would require the project to take less right of way, and cut down fewer trees.
The city council is expected to make a decision on the final plan for the road sometime this summer.
A petition drive to keep the city from adding larger trails, and some expanded lanes, is still short of signatures needed to force the issue to a referendum.
Residents who live along Glade Road say they understand the need for repair, but believe the additional plans would ruin the rural nature of the road.
"Have them poll the neighborhood… poll the citizens and find out where they would want those turn lanes," suggested resident Liz Zeitlin.
City planners identified the road, which has tree canopies in some places, and runs past open fields and older homes, as a future thoroughfare as far back as 1970.
Traffic counts from 2013 show nearly 15,000 cars a day now run through the area. The road is an easy east-west route for drivers staying away from construction on Highway 183 to the south, or Hall Johnson Road to the north.
