Can Cowboys Be Punished For Adrian-To-Jerry Call?

ARLINGTON (105.3 THE FAN) -- Cowboys owner Jerry Jones concedes that he received a phone call from Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in June - a call that allegedly included Peterson expressing a desire to play for Dallas - but clearly sees the communication as something well short of a tampering violation.
"We basically talked," Jones tells 105.3 The Fan. "Adrian's from Texas and certainly it was easy to talk to such a great player."
An ESPN profile detailed the conversation, which occurred while Jones was attending a George Strait concert at AT&T Stadium.
Depending on what Peterson actually said to Jones about a desire to play for the Cowboys, the NFL could examine tampering charges.
Under the rules, Jones' safest action would've been to contact the league office regarding the call, which he apparently did not do.
For Peterson's part, he's saying the call was as innocent as Jones claims, calling it "a casual conversation ... in which I never indicated I wanted to leave the Vikings. I'd love to retire a Viking.''
For all the concern over the call, there seems to be little precedent for the NFL actually punishing a team harshly for such contact. One rare case: In 2008, the 49ers were found guilty of tampering with Bears star linebacker Lance Briggs and forfeited a fifth-round pick.
