DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - North Texas may be landlocked but a wave of pink is moving through downtown Dallas! Tens of thousands of people have descended on the Convention Center for the Mary Kay Annual Convention.

For the next several weeks, the streets of North Texas will be packed with pink Cadillacs and scores of Mary Kay salespeople. In all, some 50,000 sales members are expected to attend the five back-to-back conferences.

It's been 50 years since Mary Kay Ash used her life savings of $5,000 to open a 500 square foot storefront, selling a total of five different beauty products. Saying she wanted to "enrich women's lives," Mary Kay grew her Dallas-based cosmetics company into a multi-billion dollar entity, with more than two million independent consultants.

Mary Kay Ash ran the cosmetics company for decades and was recognized over and over for her entrepreneurial spirit. She died in 2001.

Mary Kay Inc. now offers more than 200 products to customers in 35 global markets.

A number of Dallas skyline buildings will shine pink Monday night, to mark the Mary Kay 50th anniversary.

The general session for the Mary Kay annual conference kicked off this morning. The convention runs through August 7.
