Adult Expo Promoters Fighting To Bring Event To Dallas In 2017

DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The promoters of an adult expo have sharpened their arguments and have again asked the court to let their show into the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

Like the previous request, the new legal filing asks a Federal judge to let the Exxxotica Expo into the convention center on First Amendment grounds.

It's an effort to reject a city resolution that blocked the show in early 2016 when Dallas city council members narrowly voted to ban the event from the Convention Center.

The resolution prevented the city from signing a contract with Three Expo Events, the company that's trying to hold the Exxxotica Expo.

"When the council decided to vote with their belief system and not necessarily the law, this is what happens. And unfortunately the only people that are going to pay for this are the citizens of Dallas," said Jay Handy Director of the Exxxotica Expo in early 2016.

The Exxxotica expo used the convention center in 2015, the event drew an estimated 15,000 people. The three-day event included appearances by X-rated film stars, adult-themed shows and sex toy sales. The event takes adult entertainment on the road to several cities across the United States each year.

At that time Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings explained that he did not like the event being held in Dallas, but the city's hands were tied from keeping the convention out. Rawlings was worried about the message that such an event may send regarding the sexual exploitation of women.
