Teen Killed By Oncoming Train In South Fort Worth
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - An afternoon of trying to outrun an oncoming train proved deadly for a Fort Worth teenager.
The teen was part of a group of 5 attempting to run across the tracks at Sycamore School Road near I-35W around 2:30 Sunday afternoon when he tripped and was struck by the oncoming train.
The accident happened at Hallmark Park at Sycamore School Road. The tracks there belong to the Union Pacific Railroad.
CBS 11's Brian New says the teenager was killed when he cut through a stopped train then was hit by a second moving train.
Initially, MedStar Ambulance Service believed they had three victims. When they arrived at the scene they found the teen with two other people at a nearby softball field next to the tracks.
MedStar quickly determined the other two people were witnesses to the accident, and not involved.
Investigators said the engineer saw the boys crossing and sounded his whistle to alert them but was unable to stop in time.
"We cannot reiterate enough how dangerous it is to cross the train tracks," said Fort Worth Police Sgt. Kelly Peel.
Several neighbors said for years they've worried this might happen one day. They said they've seen teenagers darting not only across the train tracks by in and out of traffic in the area all the time.
"We've had kids hit right here at the corner," said neighbor Robert Munion. "A lot of it has to do with parents not watching their kids but it's a problem here."
Neighbor Cindy Hopkins said she's warned the teenagers and has even called police but added it's done little to stop the behavior.
"It's not the first time and it's not going to be the last for sure," said Hopkins.
