Gold Cup Races
The APBA Gold Cup, alternatively called the APBA Challenge Cup, is the oldest active trophyraces in all of motorsports. The prestigious trophy was first awarded in 1904, seven years before the first Indianapolis 500 race.
This year's APBA Detroit Gold Cup Hydroplane Races will take place on the Detroit River from Friday, July 13 to Sunday, July 15. Tickets will range in price from $15 for general admission to $250 premier access.
The weekend event will feature demonstrations by U.S. Navy FA-18 Jets, Vintage Unlimited Hydroplane testing, and live music.
Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race
Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race sets sail on Saturday, July 14, 2012, in Southern Lake Huron, just north of the Blue Water Bridge. This year will mark 88 consecutive years for the world-class event. Some 200 plus sailboats and 2,500 sailors are expected take part in the annual regatta with an estimated 100,000 sailing fans and families attending the festive activities in Port Huron leading to the Saturday start.

Wyandotte Street Art Fair
The fair, a downriver tradition that draws people from all over metro Detroit, is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Saturday on Biddle between Eureka and Oak streets.
This year promises to be bigger and better than ever with live entertainment, a kids section for fun and games and lots of food diversity, including shish kebabs, deep-fried vegetables and traditional fair food like elephant ears, cotton candy, hot dogs and ice cream.
Royal Oak Garage Sale
The sale brings everything from household items and jewelry to knick-knacks, clothes and estate sale treasures to downtown Royal Oak. The sale happens 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday inside the Lafayette Avenue Parking Structure, between 5th and 6th.
It's billed as the world's biggest garage sale event, with floors and floors of new arts and crafts and vintage goodies. Up to 14,000 people are expected. Admission is $2 for shoppers 12 and over.
Pig and Whiskey
Ah, two summer favorites -- great barbecue and cold drinks ... Check out this second annual Pig and Whiskey event that happens 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday rain or shine in downtown Ferndale. Look for live entertainment, great food and a "whiskey corner" with inventive cocktails from local mixmasters. More than 10 barbecue restaurants will be on hand with creative creations, and 20 local companies will have bourbon, scotch and whiskey to sample. There will also be a beer tent.
Concert of Colors
The 20th Concert of Colors happens this weekend, continuing Friday at the DIA, then moves to the Max M. Fisher Music Center for two days of great music (indoors and outdoors) Saturday and Sunday. Family-friendly activities, food and merchandise.
George Clinton performs at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Orchestra Hall.
Lavender Festival
Here comes a beautiful event this weekend in Macomb County -- it's the 10th annual Lavender Festival, happening 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday to Saturday.
The event includes workshops, demonstrations. Garden Art. Live music. Artists. And lots and lots of Lavender. Blake Farms Orchard and Cider Mill in Armada.
DSO Live
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra performs live on the shore of Lake St. Clair at the majestic Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. Two shows this weekend. It happens Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14 at 7:30 p.m. with a fireworks finale at 9:30 p.m.
Elvis Fest
Get all shook up in Ypsilanti this weekend at the 12th annual Michigan ElvisFest is this Friday and Saturday at Riverside Park. Visit for 11 Elvis tribute artists, a car show, tons of memorabilia, and more. It happens 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and noon to midnight Saturday.
