State Seeks $12,750 For Kilpatrick Prison Stay

DETROIT (AP) - The state has joined the line of entities seeking a cut of the profits from ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's memoirs.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette's office told a judge Monday that Kilpatrick owes the state for his 14-month prison stay for probation violation.
The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press report Monday the amount is $12,750.

Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner will hear the request Wednesday.

Groner has ordered an escrow account where profits from "Surrendered! The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick" are deposited to help pay $860,000 he owes Detroit in restitution from a 2008 criminal case.

Defense attorney Daniel Hajji asked Groner to amend his ruling on profits from book sales. Groner is expected to rule Aug. 17.

Kilpatrick was released this month from prison.
