Suspect taken into custody after 30-hour standoff with police in Ypsilanti neighborhood

After more than 30 hours, an armed 53-year-old man who had barricaded himself in the attic of a Ypsilanti home was safely taken into police custody, authorities said late Monday night.

The situation resulted in evacuations for some neighbors and shelter-in-place orders for others as authorities attempted to bring an end to the standoff.

"This was a very tense situation over the course of multiple days. We are grateful that he was able to be taken into custody safely," Ypsilanti police said in a post. "Thank you to the dedicated professionals on our Community Mental Health team and all the officers and deputies from neighboring agencies who helped to ensure that no one was injured during this situation."

The suspect, identified as a 53-year-old renter, was said to be in the attic of the home.

Police began to de-escalate the situation ever since the suspect answered the door around noon Sunday, armed with a sword and acting aggressively toward officers.

Earlier Monday afternoon, Ypsilanti Police Chief Tim Anderson said they had all but exhausted all their negotiation tactics, and even when they went inside to try and bring him out, the suspect barricaded himself further in the attic.

A nearby resident told CBS News Detroit that law enforcement officers used flashbang grenades, as well as tear gas canisters.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office confirmed it used those methods, and while on the scene Monday morning, CBS News Detroit crews observed the suspect hurl one of those tear gas canisters back at SWAT members.

An investigation is ongoing.
