Pat Caputo: Triumphs of Detroit Red Wings, Pistons Outweigh Recent Disappointments

Hockey and basketball are technically winter sports, but the Red Wings and Pistons have been Our Boys Of Spring.

Sure, it's baseball season, but the Tigers had long been an afterthought until mid-June. The Lions off-season organized team activities used to be a blip on the screen, not cause for celebration because the rookies and veterans would be practicing together in shorts and helmets for the first time, which will take place with much fanfare in Allen Park today.

It seems unusual not to be walking up to Joe Louis Arena on a warm night in late May or early June. The Red Wings not being in hockey's version of the Final Four is strange. How did the Sharks beat the Red Wings? They're not supposed to beat the Red Wings. Never. Not when it really counts, anyway.
