One-Room Schoolhouse Near Lansing Seeks Tax Increase Aug. 2

ONEIDA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A one-room schoolhouse near Lansing is asking voters for more money.

A two-year tax increase of 4.5 mills would support Strange School, which offers an education from kindergarten through fifth grade. The Lansing State Journal says enrollment is capped at 20.

The millage will be on the ballot next week in Eaton County's Oneida Township District No. 3. If approved, taxes on a home with a $50,000 taxable value would go up $225 a year.

The total budget for the district is $172,400.

In a letter to the public, school board members say the millage would make a "vast difference." The school has been around since 1879.
