More Jobs For Detroiters? Voters Approve Community Benefits Ordinance

DETROIT (AP) - Voters in Detroit have passed an ordinance aimed at making sure developers provide jobs or other benefits to residents when seeking tax and other breaks on city projects.

Proposal B was approved in Tuesday's general election.

It guarantees benefits from developers when projects reach or top $75 million and tax breaks of at least $1 million are sought.

A competing ordinance -- Proposal A -- would have lowered the threshold for the benefits to projects of $15 million or more where tax breaks or a land transfer of at least $300,000 were sought.

Opponents said Proposal A would affect more projects and drive away jobs.
