Michigan State University student in custody after police investigate online threat
An online threat directed Wednesday to the Michigan State University community in East Lansing has resulted in an arrest, authorities report.
The Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety said it began the investigation about 2 p.m. after receiving information on a threat that was posted anonymously online. The police department immediately began to investigate who might have made the threat.
Within an hour, MSU police made contact with a person in the 800 block of Chestnut Road. That person was taken into custody and taken to police headquarters for additional investigation.
"Probable cause was established that this subject was responsible for posting the threat and was taken into custody," the press release said.
The person – identified as an 18-year-old female student at MSU – has been lodged at the Ingham County Sheriff's Office. In the meantime, campus police are seeking authorization from the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office for felony charges.
"We can confirm that there is no current threat to our community," their social media post said.
Campus police ask that anyone with information pertaining to this case contact MSU Police and Public Safety at 517-355-2221, or dial 911 for emergencies.
