Michigan Shut-Out Of Fed. Community Health Grants

DETROIT (WWJ) - The federal government is handing out grants for new community health centers, 67 of them in total. But Michigan was shut out entirely, while California got 20.

Chris Allen is Executive Director and CEO of the Detroit Wayne County Health Authority. He is not happy: He says the agency's pitch this spring seemed to go well.

"The takeaway was very positive, we were very pleased with the outcome and we thought we would have at least, and we went after nine new access points, we thought we would get at least 50% of them," said Allen.

"There were 25 applications statewide ... and to be shut out of the entire award process, we find totally unacceptable," said Allen.

Allen says he has no idea why the state of Michigan was snubbed. He says the Detroit-Wayne County Health Authority is looking at an appeal.
