A Westland, Michigan, man is bound over for trial for allegedly kidnapping his pregnant ex-girlfriend in 2024.

On Friday, a judge determined there was enough evidence to move forward with the trial against Dakota Joseph Varana, who is charged with unlawful imprisonment, interfering with electronic communications and domestic violence.

According to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, Dakota Joseph Varana held the Warren woman in her vehicle for two days after she picked him up from the Upper Peninsula. Prosecutors say Varana disconnected his court-ordered tether and took the woman's cellphone.

Prosecutors say that at some point, the two were at a store when the woman passed a note to a clerk saying that she had been kidnapped. Police located the vehicle in Westland and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. However, Varana refused to stop and drove off, leading to a police chase. The chase ended after Varana crashed the car and ran away. Police quickly arrested him.

The woman was not hurt in the police chase.

"The alleged actions of this individual were not only criminal but profoundly cruel. By allegedly kidnapping and holding his pregnant ex-girlfriend against her will, he inflicted unimaginable trauma on both the victim and her unborn child. No one should ever have to endure such fear and helplessness," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a statement.

Varana's next court hearing is on May 20.
