Michigan 60, MSU 59
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Freshman Trey Burke had 20 points and No. 20 Michigan Wolverines beat No. 9 Michigan State Spartans 60-59 on Tuesday night.
As heard on WWJ 950 - The Big Ten cross-state match-up came down to the final possession - the Spartans (15-4, 4-2 Big Ten) having 36 seconds to get off a shot - Keith Appling's attempt was blocked by UM's Jordan Gordon and picked up by Brandon Wood who passed to Draymond Green who could not convert - giving the win to the Wolverines (15-4, 5-2 Big Ten).
Stu Douglas made the final two points for the Wolverines with just over 36 seconds left in the game - which gave UM a one-point lead and the eventual win.
"Our guys ...we made a great block and we ended up having to get multiple stops in the end," said Michigan head coach John Beilein. " I just knew he (Trey Burke) has been a big time performer for us ... Tim has been such a solid preformer for us, so let's just get the ball in his hands nad see what he does."
Zack Novack and Tim Hardaway each had 10 points for the Wolverines.
Green had 11 rebounds for MSU but struggled offensively scoring only 7 points and the Spartans needed Green to be a factor in scoring to make the difference in the game. Derrick Nix had 13 points and 3 rebounds for the Spartans.
This is the third straight win for Michigan over MSU - next match up between the Big Ten teams will be in East Lansing on Feb. 5. You can hear all the action on WWJ 950 - the flagship station of the Michigan Wolverines.
