KKK flyers found in Dearborn Heights streets, police confirm
Police in Dearborn Heights are investigating what they called "racist and offensive Ku Klux Klan recruitment materials" that were recently found along several streets in the city.
This is the second Metro Detroit community to confirm that KKK flyers were found by area residents in the past few days. The Melvindale Police Department said last week that residents had called to report flyers found in their city, and that the documents may have been tossed from a car window.
"We unequivocally condemn the hateful and divisive message represented by these materials. Dearborn Heights is a diverse community, and attempts to intimidate, demean, or divide our residents have no place here," the Dearborn Heights police department said in a statement issued on Monday.
"We recognize the concern created by the timing of these materials following the recent demonstration in neighboring Dearborn. At this time, however, we will not speculate regarding any connection between the distribution of these materials and any particular individual, organization, or event without evidence establishing that connection.
"While the First Amendment protects even deeply offensive speech, it does not protect criminal threats, intimidation, harassment, or other unlawful conduct. The Dearborn Heights Police Department will review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take appropriate action should evidence of criminal activity be identified."
Officers asked that anyone who has security video or firsthand knowledge of who and how the materials were brought to Dearborn Heights contact the city police department.
