Jackknifed Semi Hauling 77,000 Lbs. Of Steel Shuts Down I-94
YPSILANTI (WWJ) - Drivers were urged to avoid the area after a semi truck carrying about 77,000 lbs. of steel jackknifed on I-94 in the Ypsilanti/Belleville area.
The westbound side of the freeway was completely shut down at US-12, Exit 185, west of Michigan Ave., late Thursday morning — with traffic backed up about two miles to Rawsonville Rd., Exit 187.
At 10:30 a.m., police said it could would take a while before the freeway reopened because the cargo may have to be unloaded before the truck can be straightened out.
No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.
It's unclear what caused the accident, although WWJ Traffic Reporter Lorna Stevens said there were wet and slick conditions a the time.
She suggested motorists exit at Rawsonville, Exit 187, southbound and take that to Textile Road westbound to Whittaker/Huron northbound and then back to I-94
The scene cleared by around 11:30 a.m. and the freeway reopened.
