Insanity Defense for "Serial Stabber" Suspect?

Could the man suspected of being Flint's "serial stabber" be preparing an insanity defense?

Defense attorney Ed Zeineh says a Genesee County judge approved his request for two mental exams for his client, Elias Abuelazam, as his legal team contemplates a possible insanity defense of murder and attempted murder charges against the Israeli national.

Zeineh says a notice of insanity defense was filed in order to meet a court deadline, but that does not necessarily mean that will be the strategy when the case goes to trial.

Abuelazam is charged with three killings and six attempted murders in and around Flint last spring and summer.

He's also facing an attempted murder charge in Toledo and is a suspect in a knife attack in Leesburg, Virginia. Abuelazam remains lodged at the Genesee County Jail.
