High-Tech Thieves May Target Your Car

DETROIT (WWJ/CBS) - As if we didn't have enough to worry about; now there's word that high-tech thieves have figured out how to text their way into your car.

Security experts say hackers can now break into some cars' electronic systems, unlocking doors and disabling alarms, even starting the engine, all via text.

This new vulnerablity arising as more cars, security and navigation systems are connected to cellular networks and it doesn't stop there, the experts say the same type of wireless chips are used in power plants and cash machines, medical  devices and traffic lights, may also prove vulnerable.

WWJ spoke with Berkley Car Tunes' store manager Aaron Nims who says he's not surprised to hear about the hacking. "Over the next year or two as more cars are connected to smart phones ... it wouldn't surprise me that alarms could be hacked into."

Nims says they have not heard of any hacking issues with their installations but it's key to " keep your cell phone locked and secure and to have a good anti-virus system installed."

It's important to keep in mind personal security and to keep passwords secure Nims says.
