Health Tips: Benefits Of Cinnamon

Pat Sweeting Reporting

Several weeks ago, we told you how vinegar may offer some benefit for controlling blood sugar. Well, another product you may keep in your cupboard and use as a flavoring in your tea, coffee or pies and cakes, may also aid in the digestion of various foods.

If you guessed cinnamon, you're correct.

Like vinegar, cinnamon is believed to help lower blood sugar levels and aid in digestion of dairy products and fruit.
But, there is a potential downside. Some cinnamon contains the naturally-occurring substance called coumarin, which can act as a blood-thinner.

So, if you're already taking a blood thinner for a heart condition and you figure more cinnamon in your diet would be a less-expensive way to also keep your blood sugar in check -- think again. You could end-up paying a much higher cost resulting from a negative interaction.

It's always best to consult with a medical specialist familiar with your medical history and the medications you're already taking before adding herbal or dietary supplements to the mix.
