Friday Rally To Address Youth Obesity In Detroit
DETROIT (AP) — About 700 Detroit Public Schools students are expected to take part in a youth program Friday morning that targets childhood obesity.
City Councilman Andre Spivey says the rally at Wayne State University for fourth- and fifth-graders will kick off his newly formed Minors Overcoming Obesity with Veggies and Exercise task force.
M.O.O.V.E. Detroit is a spinoff of first lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign, which pushes for better school lunches, more access to fruits and vegetables and more physical activity among children.
Spivey said in a release Wednesday that for Detroit to "be a strong community, it must be healthy first."
The students will hear motivational speakers and learn about healthy food choices. A physical fitness expert also will show them proper ways to work out and stay physically fit.
