Free Light Bulb Exchange At Ypsi's Energy Outlet

The Energy Outlet, Michigan's first energy efficiency store, is celebrating its first year anniversary with a Free CFL Light Bulb Exchange.

Starting this Thursday, July 1, through Friday, July 30, anyone who brings in incandescent light bulbs to the Ypsilanti store can exchange them for energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs for free, up to 10 per person.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Washtenaw County Weatherization Program, the Energy Outlet hopes to encourage the public to increase their use of energy efficient light bulbs. Replacing energy-hogging incandescent bulbs with energy-saving CFLs is a simple, cost-effective way to slow the rate of global climate change while saving money on utility bills.

CFL Light Bulb Facts (from www.EnergyStar.gov  Web site):

* An Energy Star qualified CFL will save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about six months. It uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb.
* If every American home replaced just one light with an Energy Star light, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, about $700 million in annual energy costs, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to the emissions of about
800,000 cars.

Guidelines for the Free Light Bulb Exchange:

* Each free CFL light bulb is available ONLY in exchange for each incandescent light bulb, up to 10 per person
* Free CFLs include 13W, 19W, and 23W light levels, which are comparable to 60W, 75W, and 100W incandescent bulbs, subject to availability
* Free CFLs are spiral, screw-in, standard base bulbs
* Recycling & Mercury Information Sheets will be distributed with the CFL bulbs

Located at 44 E. Cross St. in Ypsilanti, the Energy Outlet is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Energy Outlet, visit www.energyoutlet.org, contact Deb Heed at deb@cec-mi.org, or call (734) 483-9000.
