Fire Issues Prompt Kia Recall

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Possible fire concerns are causing Kia to recall more than 58 thousand older compact vehicles.

The concern is that the metal straps on the gas tank on the 2004 to 2007 Spectra's can rust, causing it to fall to the ground. That could cause a leak and a fire. It's unclear at this point whether this has actually happened in real life.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem is specific to the LD trim of the Spectra.

Kia will send instructions to owners. Dealers will replace the straps on the fuel tanks with zinc-coated parts at no cost to owners.

The recall affects cars in 20 cold-weather states and Washington, D.C., where salt is used to clear roads of ice and snow.
